Opening Comments by Mayor Peter J. Malouf - Regular Meeting of Tuesday, March 18, 2025

Here is Mayor Peter J. Malouf's opening comments at the March 18, 2025 regular meeting of the Town Council. It has been adapted for the Web.

Note: The full recording of the meeting will be available on the Town's Youtube Channel.

Good evening to all and thank you for joining us in whichever format you have chosen.

My opening remarks tonight will be as much about immediate issues as well as longer standing files.

Charging Stations

I'm pleased to announce that we've installed 2 electric chargers in our underground parking lot and 2 more will be installed shortly in the outdoor parking lot at Town Hall, although a delivery problem is delaying the work somewhat. As you will see this evening, we also plan to award a contract for the installation of chargers at public works for our blue-collar employees.

Culture

We often speak of various cultural events, mainly those associated with the library or the summer concerts. However, this year, as a new cultural event, there will be a  jazz, classic and pop concert held at the United Church on May 22. Tickets will be on sale later in April. I hope to see you there enjoying the music of Les Musiciens à la Carte.

Urban Planning

As previously mentioned, our teams are working on the revision of several by-laws: construction, permits and certificates, zoning and measures to address climate change related to our urban fabric, all in order to update them and better reflect today's best practices, while meeting residents' expectations. Public consultations associated with these by-laws will be held before the end of June.

Security

Traffic and road safety continue to be a priority. In the coming weeks, we will be making adjustments to traffic lights in the Town centre to improve flow and enhance pedestrian safety. A new Stop sign will be installed at the intersection of Graham Blvd. and Simcoe.

Additionally, tonight we plan to approve funding for new priority pedestrian signals on Laird near St-Joseph Church and on Rockland at Trenton, ensuring safer crossings for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Communications

In the spirit of better communicating with our diverse clientele, we've set up a new section on our website for seniors to keep them informed of activities, services and programs specifically geared to their needs.

Tariffs and The Trade War

The announcement of tariffs and the ensuing trade war influences the Town and our projects and purchases. We are following the development closely and are putting into place required measures to safeguard the Town, while promoting buying local all within legal limitations municipalities are held to and keeping in mind budgetary constraints. Discussions and decisions will be taking place among council members in the coming weeks and months to define concrete actions to take.

Thank you for listening and I wish you a happy spring…. which officially arrives later this week."
