Town of Mount Royal is proud to support a vibrant senior community, with a notable portion (23%) of our residents over the age of 60. Through a diverse range of activities, events, and services — from fitness classes and social gatherings to excursions and conferences — we aim to enhance well-being, encourage connections, and celebrate our seniors’ valuable contributions.


As part of Quebec’s ‘Municipalité des Amis des Aînés’ program, the Town is dedicated to fostering active aging and providing programs tailored to the needs and interests of our senior residents, enriching lives and ensuring all feel valued and engaged.

This section dedicated to Seniors includes everything you need to participate in activities, find relevant information and access specific services.

Program for Seniors

Our Town offers a diverse array of activities and events tailored to our 60+ community. From social gatherings and exercise classes to enriching excursions and conferences, we aim to promote health, wellness, and social connections. Discover our programs and join in!

A Recreation card is required to participate in the Senior's activities (for 55 years and over) and may be obtained at the Recreation Centre (at no charge for 60 years and over). For information, please contact 514 734-2943 or 514 734-2928.

Non-residents wanting to benefit from the Senior trips at the regular price must purchase an annual Travel Card Membership for the price of $20.

Exercise classes  

We offer accessible, Senior-friendly exercise classes focused on gentle movements to enhance strength, flexibility, and balance, promoting energy, confidence, and overall well-being. These classes provide a supportive, social setting for staying active and maintaining joint and muscle health at any ability level.

Consult our current schedule for exercise classes for Seniors:

  • Balance, Mobility, and Coordination: Integrated balance exercises. The objective is to improve stability on your feet and increase strength in your legs. A chair is available for support. Bilingual program.
  • Body and Mind Fitness: This class offers faster-paced, more dynamic exercises targeting upper and lower-body strength, core stability and balance, all while incorporating resistance training.
  • Gentle Yoga: A seated and standing yoga program, incorporating breath with movement.
  • Line dancing: We’ve got Latin, swing, rock and roll and more. No experience and no partner required.
  • Staying Active!: Safe and simple exercises, designed to increase range of motion and strength, to relieve arthritis symptoms.
  • Tai Chi for Seniors: A medically proven way to develop exceptional physical health, balance, flexibility and coordination while increasing mental acuity and emotional vitality.
  • Therapeutic Yoga: Learn how to modify poses to suit your body in a therapeutic practice designed to stimulate your endocrine system. This class focuses on balance, stress release, flexibility, and focus, all while building strength and finding equilibrium through breath. Must be able to lie down and get up without assistance.
  • Yoga on a mat: A gentle yoga class on a mat. You need to be able to lie down and get up without help. Bring your own mat.

Excursions

Join us for enjoyable excursions that make it easy for seniors to explore new places and experiences! All trips are accompanied by our dedicated recreation supervisor, ensuring a safe and comfortable outing. Transportation is provided, and for select activities, we offer convenient pick-up from residences within the Town. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get out, connect with others, and enjoy a variety of destinations and activities together:

  • Cultural Outings: Visits to museums, theaters, and historical sites.
  • Nature Trips: Enjoy the beauty of local parks and gardens with guided tours.
  • Culinary Experiences: Visit local restaurants for a unique taste of our region.
  • Multi-Day Trips: For those seeking adventure, we occasionally offer overnight trips to nearby cities or scenic regions.

An excursion committee made up of volunteers and the Recreation Supervisor for Seniors meets to plan and choose excursions tailored to the interests of Seniors.

Activities for Seniors

Senior’s Lounge

Join us in the Senior’s Lounge (60, Roosevelt Avenue) for relaxed and engaging games of bridge, offered Wednesday through Sunday from 13:00 to 16:00. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with others in a social setting while enjoying a stimulating game. Whether you're an experienced player or a beginner, all are welcome.

A mandatory membership card is required, renewable annually on November 1st. Membership is free for residents with a recreation card, and is only $10 per year for non-residents.

Enjoy a welcoming space to relax, chat, play games, or read every Tuesday afternoon.

Assistance and Resources

Our Town offers a wide range of services to support seniors in the community, with additional resources available from external organizations.

Town-Offered Resources:

  • Community Support Services Department: Community support services are free, confidential and available to all Town of Mount Royal Residents. The Town offers a variety of resources, including psychosocial consultations, links to social and government services, caregiver support, homemaker care, daily wellness calls, Meals on Wheels, accompaniment to medical appointments, and a friendly visit program — all aimed at enhancing quality of life and supporting residents' needs. Community Support services

  • Registration for Senior Identification Booklets: The objective of this program is to provide security to seniors in case of a medical emergency. For more information, please contact Melanie Kearns at 514 734-2943.
  • Library Services:
    - If it is difficult for you to come to the library, you could be eligible for our home delivery service. For more information, please contact Kathleen Dickson: kathleen.dickson@ville.mont-royal.qc.ca.
    - Benefit from Tech Drop-In at the Library weekly sessions to help with digital questions, from setting up a device to online safety.

  • Société de transport de Montréal (STM) – Reduced Fare Programs
    Offers reduced fares for seniors 65+ and adapted transportation services for those with mobility issues.
  • Info-Santé (811): A 24/7 phone line providing quick health advice and directing seniors to appropriate healthcare services in Montreal.
  • CLSCs (Local Community Service Centres): Offers healthcare, social services, home care, and mental health support. Locations are spread across Montreal neighborhoods.
  • Little Brothers (Les Petits Frères): Offers companionship and support to isolated seniors through social events and home visits.
  • Seniors Referral Line: Telephone: 211. Provides referrals and information on services available for seniors in Montreal.
