Prevention Tips to Counter Break-Ins

The police officers from Police station 26 and the Town of Mount Royal Public Security would like to remind you of some prevention tips in order to protect your home against break-ins.

  • Lock your doors and windows when you are away.
  • At night, make sure the exterior of your house is well lit.
  • Do not keep important sums of money inside your home and place your valuable jewelry in a fixed, concealed security box in your residence and elsewhere than in the master bedroom
  • To prevent the theft of your bike, register it on the Garage 529 website or mobile application.
  • During a prolonged absence, notify a trusted neighbor of your departure and ask them to collect newspapers and your mail which will be left at your door.
  •  In your absence, give the impression that someone is home. Install a timer system for your lights.
  • The installation of cameras and an alarm system can also prove to be an effective as well as dissuasive solution.
  • The Town of Mount Royal Public Security offers several prevention programs, including home surveillance for absences of more than one day, priority alarm response, a home inspection to give you personalized advice, bike tagging and the Neighborhood Watch program. Contact Lieutenant Daniel Lepore at 514-734-4224 for more details.
  • Keep your information up to date with the alarm company.
  • Inspect the premises before your departure. Store any object that could facilitate access to the 2nd floor of your residence from the outside such as a ladder, a recycling bin, a barbecue, a table, etc. Make sure to lock the shed.
  • Be careful of your posts on social networks that inform potential thieves of your absence.
  • Upon your return, if a break-in has occurred, do not touch anything. Exit your residence and contact 9-1-1.
  • A functional alarm system, with stickers on the doors and windows to indicate its presence. Make sure you have motion detector on the second floor.

If you witness suspicious activities in your neighborhood, do not hesitate to contact 911. Your action can help prevent one of your neighbors or yourself from becoming victims of this type of crime.
