The Red London Telephone Kiosk Gets a Makeover
You may have noticed that Great Britain's famous red telephone booth, an emblematic symbol of the town center of Mount Royal, was removed a few days ago from its location adjacent to Desjardins Park.
Indeed, it is now headed for a restoration workshop where it will be refurbished according to the state-of-the-art, following a contract awarded by the Town, which on this occasion wishes to restore this typical piece of English urban furniture to its original glory.
The model K 6 (kiosk no. 6), located in Town of Mount Royal, was designed by renowned British architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935.
It is this classically designed version that is most widely used in the UK, and symbolizes the red cabin par excellence. It features bolted cast-iron sections with three windowed sides. The door is made of teak wood with a metal cup handle. Its domed roof features a rectangular opening for signage with serifed capital letters on opaque glass. The pediment bears a molded royal crown.
Kiosk K6, now part of Mount Royal's urban heritage, is said to have been donated to the Town of Mount Royal following Expo 67, which was held here in Montreal.
Once restored and repainted in "Post Office Red", the cabin will return to its original location in the heart of downtown, a stone's throw from the new Station Square.
