Pilot project at two town intersections: Improving safety for Townies

The Town of Mount Royal has launched a pilot project to improve road safety and reduce through-traffic on certain streets. For the past 10 days, flower pots have been placed at the intersections of Laird/Caledonia and Graham/Lazard, creating temporary obstacles. These will remain in place for approximately three months.

Responding to residents' concerns

This pilot project is a direct response to numerous complaints and requests from residents concerning through-traffic, traffic volume, excessive speed and disregard for signage. The safety of all residents is a priority and, despite the mitigation measures already in place and the regular interventions of the Police Department, the Town recognizes the need to change motorists' habits and behaviours to achieve lasting results.

Pilot project objectives

The main objective of the pilot project is to reduce through-traffic and distribute traffic more evenly across the town. Although some disruption is unavoidable, including short detours for some residents, the Town hopes that these changes will have a positive impact, reducing traffic volume and speed while increasing safety in these areas.

Additional measures

In parallel with this pilot project, extended speed humps have been installed on several streets to reduce vehicle speeds. See map. It should be noted that, in its analysis and observation of similar situations, the Town has found that the addition of "Stop" signs does not achieve the desired objective of reducing speed and improving safety on the streets. This is one of the reasons why the pilot project was set up.

Evaluation of the pilot project

The pilot project will be evaluated through visual field observations, plate counts and feedback from residents. This data will be used to determine the effectiveness of the measures put in place, and to adjust the project if necessary.

The Town thanks residents for their understanding and patience during this pilot project, which ultimately aims to make our streets safer.
